This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a test for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together resides a profound contemplation about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when the couple transition from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
